3 out of 5 stars The fun only lasts a little while...   September 7, 2010

I got this game for my 8 year-old son, who enjoyed it for two days but hasn't played it since. The main "Story" part of the game follows the plot of the Toy Story 3 movie, and in each stage you have to help Woody jump, climb, walk around, etc. to complete a particular task. In one of the early levels, for example, you have to help Woody figure out how to get out of the garage by climbing and jumping on various objects until you reach the garage opener. Once you beat the "Story" part of the game, you can play freestyle in the "Playtime" part of the game, which lets you drop your characters into various environments, build a base, and fight off "evil toys" to unlock special gadgets and upgrades for your base.

This game was cute enough, but honestly, just way too easy for an experienced 8 year-old gamer. The "Story" mode took him one afternoon to beat, and it wasn't enough fun for him to care about beating it a second time. "Playtime" kept him busy for a second day, but since then he hasn't gone back to this game once. Compare that to the Star Wars Lego games, which have kept him occupied for weeks at a time, or Pokemon Platinum (800 hours and counting, seriously), and I just don't think this game has much replay value for the older child. Might be worth it for the younger DS player who needs less of a challenge... but for older Toy Story fans, I'd suggest renting it, not buying it.

3 out of 5 stars 4 Different Modes   September 4, 2010
Noname
I gave Toy Story 3 Nintendo DS to my six year old to play. Within a day, she beat the game twice. She enjoyed it; but after winning the second time, she hasn't been back to play it since.

There are four different modes of play. It must be noted that although this game is marked for two player multi-card play (two players can play provided they each have their own game), the multi-player mode is only available in the Playtime Mode.

STORY MODE

Play out the Toy Story movie scenes. It's very easy, because the top screen tells the player what to do. There are these balls players collect that guide them to the proper locations and the screen tells the players exactly which buttons to push when. The balls unlock more game elements, like costumes and mini games.

PLAYTIME

Playtime Mode is a collection of mini games from Storytime Mode. These must be unlocked by first playing the game in the Storytime Mode.

QUICK PLAY (IMAGINARY WORLD)

Quick Play is a collection of scenes from the Storytime Mode that can be revisited and replayed. The scenes must be unlocked first by playing them in the Storytime Mode.

DGAMER

Dgamer is an online community through a WiFi connection. Players can customize their avatar, chat, send gifts, etc. We do not use WiFi much in our house, so my children have not played this mode.

SUMMARY

This is a fun game for young kids. However, it is very short and interests wanes quickly once the game has been beaten. Two player mode is limited.

5 out of 5 stars A Fun Game   August 31, 2010

Review of "Toy Story 3: The Video Game" for Nintendo DS. My little reviewers really like this game and give it two thumbs up! This game allows players to take control of Woody, Buzz, and Jessie as they experience adventures from the film and also enjoy the "open-world" gameplay of toybox mode. A perfect way to spend time on the DS. My little guys give it five stars!

Toy Story 3 is an amazing property and deserves an amazing game. Unfortunately, the DS version seems very rushed and sloppy. The graphics are sometimes painfully chunky (though other times not so bad) and the story is presented with still images and bad music, rather than cutscenes from the movie as in some other DS games. More importantly, the often boring challenges, such as walking around to collect items, requires the ability to read to know what you are supposed to be doing (there is no voice acting to tell you this). So, the very young target audience that this sort of task seems aimed at is lost. Also, from the very first level in story mode, which has Woody walking down a train, the touch controls are poorly utilized. You are required to swipe up with the stylus to make Woody jump, rather than a simple button press. This makes jumping feel floaty and annoying. Story mode is mercifully short, though the final level in the trash is actually not so bad.

The game does have some redeeming qualities. The mine cart and space missions are fun, despite being overly sparse and repetitive. Also, there is a tower defense minigame that is actually very well done. It is a nice kid-friendly version of the concept. For those that don't know, tower defense games have you setting up weapons/soldiers (in this case, cute toy weapons) to protect a tower from waves of enemies. It requires some thoughtful planning, but is never too challenging.

I would only recommend this game to the most hardcore of Toy Story 3 fans. Otherwise, there are much better DS games for the money.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent game for kids   August 30, 2010

"Awesome! This is just like the movie!" said my 8-year old granddaughter when she played this game. The bottom line is anyone who is a Toy Story fan will love this game. It's easy to learn. She figured it out and showed me how to play, all in less than an hour.

For kids, 6-10-years old this is a fun yet challenging game with three game modes. Story Mode is fun because it follows the film's storyline. Imaginary World is more of a thinking game and encourages kids to use their imaginations as they make believe missions and fly through space as Buzz or catch the runaway train as Woody. The Playtime mode contains levels of achievement - Old West, Space, Farm, Bonnies, Prehistoric - that are unlocked for play as each level is completed. These non-violent games involve strategy and decision-making. And if kids are interested in communicating with other players, this game features DGamer mode.

For adults, this is an amusing game to pass the time without feeling like you are committing yourself to hours and hours of play. My granddaughter says this game now tops her list of favorite games. This game is a great value for the price.
