4 out of 5 stars Improved - not perfect   September 10, 2010
Toothless (San Antonio)
The controller software from razor works well, but does not allow using the key mappings for the older N52 controller. You will have to set up all new key mappings. The advantage of the new software is that the maps are loaded into the controller. No software in memory to interpret what to do during game play.

5 out of 5 stars Jumped me from 1600 to 2k in WoW on BG9   September 9, 2010

This game pad comes with easy to use software, can run macros if you want, and has a perfect set up for the computer gamer.
My review will look at this gamepad from a World of Warcraft perspective. I am an average-skill arena player sitting at 2k mmr in 3's and fives since I bought this product.
The look and feel of the pad is presentable and even welcome on my desk: a sleek black case with blue back lighting.
It holds three sets of keybinds that can be swapped between quickly.
I use the left most row for shift and control modifiers, with the far left corner being tab, and this results in 11 keys, mw up, mw down, and middle button presses on the top of the pad. I use the thumb for my alt bind, which modifies and serves as my ptt. In skype, I free it up for an important in-game cooldown. The D-pad can be bound *very* creatively, and I have up bound as pet attack (shift up pet recall), down bound as fear (shift is deathcoil, control is howl of terror) and this is one of my faves. It is very natural-feeling. Left is strafe left, right is strafe right, and playing with a MX 1100 mouse, I have a few more binds. The dpad actually has 8 binds, but i have the corner binds disabled.

In my opinion, this product is more suited to WoW than a standard keyboard, far more comfortable, good looking, and responsive. It took me a mere two days to learn on it, and I was able to log onto other characters and immediately know which binds were which. I have 9 80's, and this a relief when I realized that my hand "knew" what to hit on other toons.

Great Product. If you're looking for a keyboard alternative, buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Worth every penny   August 30, 2010

I currently have both the g13 and the n52te, and no matter how I look at it, the g13 is better. However, comparing by prices, the n52te is just as good as the Logitech g13, which basically has an extra backlight LED screen that no one ever seems to use. The only downside to this product is for people with small hands, and it is sort of uncomfortable to reach the default space bar.

If you don't want to fork out the cash for a g13, get the n52te instead.

5 out of 5 stars Great speedpad!   August 30, 2010

This thing works great, its very cheap and does what its suppose to do. Its comfortable and durable and just looks awesome. It takes a bit of time to adjust to it, but its a huge help for gaming, no matter what kinda game you play. To make up for some lack of buttons you can use combinations of buttons to create tons of more functions. The marco feature is very nice also, you can preform an entire combo with a single keystroke. For me the hardest part to get used to is the joystick/directional buttons, i find some discomfort when using that but its primarily cause im not used to it, with time its gotten alot easier. Sometimes it does slide around a little bit and i have to readjust but its mainly cause im using alot of force on it. Its not to big a deal though.

This works very good with windows 7 out of the box, i just installed it by following the directions for it and everything works fine. Ive had no trouble with it and ive owned it for about 2 weeks now. I would highly recommend this to any gamer whether casual or hardcore. Combine this, a gaming headset to talk to teammates or party members, and a good mouse and you never have to touch the keyboard while gaming :>

3 out of 5 stars n52te != n52   August 30, 2010
Jordan Edwards (Houston, Texas)
Once upon a time there was a gaming peripheral called the n52...
...and if it wasn't for that product, I might be able to give the n52te higher marks.

Now, before I start into bashing on this product, let me say that it does offer several new and exciting features that the original did not. For one, the palm rest now has two different placement options, a huge plus for those with bigger hands. Next up, the D-Pad has a detachable nub that transforms it into a joystick; very cool! Additionally, if blue LEDs are your thing, the n52te is far more blinding than the original ever was.

I have owned the original n52 for many years now and consider that purchase to be far and away the best money ever spent towards PC gaming. Sadly, I didn't have the foresight to buy up a couple spares before they were discontinued (a mistake I will not repeat with the Razer Naga, tyvm) and recently I have been having issues with the microswitch for the 'big orange button.' The n52te had been sitting in my Amazon cart for what seems like forever when it finally dropped to a price that I just couldn't say no to. I wish I had.

Since it's release, I've heard nothing but complaints about the Razer software powering this product. Upon reading reviews, though, it seemed to me that all the major issues were ironed out in late 2008. Having used the n52te for several weeks now, I would agree with this statement. The software has been entirely bug-free since I installed the newest software and flashed the latest firmware..... but it still falls well short of the software in the original. Everything just feels needlessly complex. Making simple macros takes forever if you are anal about your delays. Switching between favorite profiles is much more of a hassle and the loads are not instantaneous like they were with the original. There is no default keyset, effectively reducing the number of potential keys on this thing by like 26. All in all, it just pales in comparison.

As for the device itself, I only have one complaint. While it is obvious that someone took a serious stab at improving the design overall (compared to the original, it feels more soft and warm and the keys feel less like $5 keyboard keys and more like high-end laptop keys) they might have done so without considering the innards. On my n52te, the single most important key on the whole device (key 03 or what would often be 'W' in WASD games) does not make proper contact with the circuits beneath it when fully depressed, forcing me to mash the key harder than I otherwise would which quickly leads to hand fatigue. I am beginning to notice this on two other keys as well, though not nearly as bad. This one issue may end up being the deal-breaker for me.
