1 out of 5 stars Age of Crashpires III   July 14, 2010

Age of Empires III is a very fun, innovative game and a worthy successor to Age of Empires II, but it crashes constantly. I think this is really obnoxious. I even installed a patch which was supposed to have corrected the problem but the game still crashes.

On the innovative side, one of the new features of the game is that as you play you build experience, which allows you to unlock things from your home city. However, if your game crashes all the experience you accumulate from the round you were playing is forfeited. Also, there is a wide variety of units available, and putting together armies is more complex than it was in AOE II. I also like that they changed the farms. Now you can have 10 farmers working on one "mill" as opposed to in AOE II where each farmer had their own plot of land. Also, the plantation building is a nice addition because you can get gold from it (and you can get gold from whaling).

One feature I don't care for is that the population limit is a max of 200 and there is a limit as to the amount of some buildings you can build. This makes it difficult to build armies that are well rounded and that makes execution of strategy difficult at times. Sometimes you end up just overwhelming your opponent with a single unit type.

Despite the fact that this game is really fun I would not recommend it. Ultimately the crashing proves to be too frustrating. I think they should have done a much better job producing this game and making sure it wasn't plagued with constant crashing, and considering that the game has been around for several years and that it has been notorious for crashing I'm shocked that they did not fix this problem in the currently available copies or with a patch.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, poor story telling   May 31, 2010

Decent graphics, a lot of fun, lots of different gameplay options.

The worst part about this game is probably the bad storytelling in the single player game. Not too original... fight to keep your colony alive, get stronger, and stop the circle from getting to the lake of ossus... three different times.

4 out of 5 stars Fun but cross platform issues no PC to MAC games   April 12, 2010

I got this game for my Macbook pro so that I could plan lan games with my family. I am the first convert to Macs and figured that the same game on both systems would play cross platform, no it will not. It sees the other game (on the multilayer screen) but gives a CRC version miss match error when connecting. This is why I give the game a 4 out of 5.

As far as the game play, It is less complicated than AOE 2 was but still fun to play. It seems to have less options as far a game type and things like that. It also has a better mix of civilizations, in AOE 2 Spanish was rigged to be better than the rest, not so in this game.

I gave this game to my grandson for Christmas. He loves it. The item was exactly as advertised and it was delivered a few days after I placed the order.

3 out of 5 stars Decent, but crashes   January 30, 2010

This is a good game for RTS. Unfortunately it crashes about every third game I play. It's frustrating enough that I would recommend not buying it. BTW I have a new macbook pro.
